Satellite dish + box + code?

I live in California and I’m new to satellite TV. I heard that if I buy a satellite box (~$25) to connect my TV with, and a satellite dish (~$25) and put in at the balcony, I will get like a hundred of channels FOR FREE… is it true? My friend also recommended me to buy a satellite box that can auto-download the “code” from the internet so that I won’t have to download code manually every week… is that right?
