The citizenship test – the last obstacle to become a Canadian citizen
I recently attended a ceremony in Vancouver Citizenship Pakistan with a couple who are friends of mine and were about to become Canadian citizens. I can honestly say that this was a most solemn and moving ceremony I attended recently – with the official speeches, the pledge and sing the anthem. The only negative was that his son, 20 year old Fahim did not attend the ceremony because it was not citizenship examination.
Canadian citizenship test is designed to ensure that all potential Canadian citizens speak an official language – English or French and know enough about the country they wish to become citizens. The examination must be taken by all applicants age 18 to 54 who meet the requirements basic citizenship. The most important of these is the permanent resident status, which should not be questioned. The second condition is that applicants must have lived for 3 years during the last four in Canada and have no criminal record (ie, convicted criminal or currently in prison).
The Proof of citizenship is a response to short and combination of multiple choice questions. It covers many topics such as geography, history, political systems and economic, history and cultural symbols, the citizens' rights and obligations. There are 20 questions to be answered for 30 minutes. A candidate must correctly answer 12 of 20 questions for the exam.
