Moving from Atlanta and considering Raliegh, Charlotte or Tampa?

Hi, I need sound advice from those of you who know Raliegh/Durham, Charlotte and Tampa. My wife and I have been relatively successful here in Atlanta as professionals. We are not rich, but we make a good living. I’m in corporate sales, she is a real estate agent. As you all probably know Atlanta is the new Los Angeles of the south, ie 24 hour traffic, massive amounts of illegal immigrants, thousands of Katrina refugees and unspeakable crimes. We’ve decided that we are going to relocate but need your input.

We hear that Charlotte is like Atlanta circa 1990 w/ lots to do and a thriving construction boom;
We hear that Raliegh/Durham is quaint, affordable w/ tech jobs there;
We hear that Tampa is very picturesqe w/ beaches but the Florida economy is driving people out in droves.

Please give me your feedback to dispel or confirm these myths. This will be a great help in our final decision! Thanks!

Hi, I am fairly new to Charlotte and have family in Raleigh but have lived in North Carolina all of my life. I am very familiar with Atlanta as well. Charlotte is a very rapidly growing city with lots to do and lots of jobs. If you love sports then Charlotte is for you (Nascar, Football, and Basketball). There is also a new White Water Rafting Center located in Charlotte. There are several shopping centers and malls located in Charlotte with several of the same stores as you will find in Atlanta (Neiman Marcus, Nordstroms, Burberry, etc….). If you like to shop then Charlotte wins over Raleigh as Charlotte is the home to some of North Carolina’s 1st and only stores (ex. Neiman Marcus). Charlotte also has an amusement park (Carowinds). So all in all, Charlotte is a ’small’ version of Atlanta!
As far as corporate sales, Charlotte is home to several Fortune 500 companies such as Bank of America, Duke Energy, Lowe’s, Wachovia, etc…… with major headquarters such as Time Warner Cable, Harris Teeter, Belk, etc. located in Charlotte.
Charlotte also has the plans for a ‘light rail/commuter rail’ line that is currently under construction.
Charlotte also has several performing arts centers and museums.
Charlotte is about 1 1/2 hours from the mountains and about 3 hours from SC beaches.

Raleigh is nice as well with major areas developing but it is smaller than Charlotte. Research Triangle Park (tech jobs) is located right outside of Raleigh. Raleigh, being the capital of NC, is rich of history!

Either way, if you choose to make North Carolina home, we look forward to having you.
Hope this helps!
