Extension Cords – A Basic Checklist
Nearly every household makes use of some extension cords for one reason or another. Most people know that they should hide theirs while others live more care free lives and leave theirs out in the open. Regardless of whether you hide or leave yours out in the open, when it comes time to choose one there are a few things to keep in mind.
First and foremost you will want to consider the length. You should measure how far the outlet is from the device you need it for. You will want to give yourself a couple inches of slack but you should not have more then a foot of slack. That will ultimately cause you to wrap up extra cord which is something you want to avoid.
The next big question is if you need it for indoor use only. There are extension cords rated for outdoor use so make sure you use one of those if you indeed will be using it outdoors. It would not be safe to use an indoor cord for outside use.
Next you should check the total wattage of the device you will be using. You will want to make sure the one you are using is rated high enough for the device it will be plugged into. Failure to do so may cause your device not to work at it’s potential and could also pose a potential fire hazard.
Keeping these things in mind will go a long way when it is time to pick the best extension cord.
