How do We keep the Land Free from a Proposed Highway???
My Husband’s Family has 100 Acres of land that has been in the Family for five generations. The Department of Tansportation has drawn up a proposed Highway that will cut completly across the property. With no fence the land will be completly open. It will absolutely ruin this beautiful area where We had planned to live, in the years to come.
There is a meeting scheduled for the 22nd of February about this. The paperwork basically says they will answer any questions and accept any paperwork anyone wants to submit. It sounds like a done deal.
Has Anyone gone through this before, Or does Anyone have any insight or ideas……..PLEASE…………
In regards to the lady in Redlands who “Won” (from Debbiethu)–it wasn’t exactly a win. Redlands got it’s school on her property and she got to live in her house until she dies (in the middle of the now-owned “school property”!) Sometimes you only get a little compromise. You didn’t say what state the land is in. Search for “_?state?_Legal Code” and then search the Code for Eminent Domain to research the law in your state. Knowledge is power–even if you are able to hire a lawyer–and certainly if you can’t.
Debbiethu’s ideas are great!! I could even ship you some kangaroo rats from my land in CA!! They might like it there!
As an owner of homesteaded 5 generation land in North Dakota, I understand the emotional ties to the specific parcel of land. However, if nothing can be done to stop them, at least make sure they have to purchase the whole parcel. Be sure to ask for the new valuation it would be as land bordering the highway–perhaps even as commercial property.
Then you can purchase land nextdoor or nearby in the same beautiful country and perhaps even have free access to your ex-land without paying taxes on it.
As a pragmatist, I would suggest that if all you do doesn’t work, try Prayer. Just maybe. . .a God who offers to move mountains for you, could probably also move a little thing like a road. As one spiritual writer said,”In answer to earnest prayer, God can turn the hearts and minds of men (read that “government”) as He can turn the waters of the sea.” God is also a pragmatist. He says “Try me out. If it doesn’t work forget it!” Can’t hurt!!
