Can divorce papers be filed in two different states by both parties?

Four years ago I filed for divorce in NY. We reconciled and things seemed fine. The papers were never withdrawn from the court, case was just put on hold.
Recently my husband walked out on me and our children. He has lived in NY for four years but has kept a GA drivers license. He is now staying in NJ.
Even though there was papers filed in NY and he has lived here for four years, can he file divorce papers in GA? We were married there 9 years ago.
I know I need to contact my attorney about this. I will when I feel ready to actually file for the divorce again.

One files in the county of the state where one currently lives. The benefit to filing, is that the respondent would need to travel to the place of filing. So if you’re in different locations, it would be to your benefit to file.

This is directly from the mouth of an wise divorce attny I spoke with regarding my daughter’s pending divorce.

PS, anyone can ASK for anything. Doesn’t mean it will be granted.
