What did you moms have by the time you were 20 weeks?

I am 20 weeks pregnant, I only have a few outfits so far. I know it’s a girl, we found out a couple weeks ago. I was just wondering what other mothers had bought by the time they were 20 weeks. Does anyone know where I could get a checklist online? I have no idea where to start it seems like there is so much stuff to buy. What could you already moms not live without?? I am having a baby shower but it’s going to be very small and I am not expecting any of the big ticket items. It is a shower that the co workers are throwing for me. Any input will help. Thanks for your comments.

I did not start buying stuff until after my shower….probably around 32 weeks.

Here are the things that I found most useful:

GOOD receiving blankets. Get the ones that are 30 x 40….most are 30 x 30 and that extra 10inches makes swaddling SO MUCH EASIER!!! Child of Mine (at WalMart) makes really really great ones. You can get 3 of them for $9.00 and they are durable, soft, and come in great patterns!!

A Moses Basket….I got one of these for my second baby and it was WONDERFUL!! Better than a bassinet because you can move it around….put baby in a quiet room at naptime or by your bed at night. Easy to take over to grandma’s, too!! When they out grow it….turn it into a toy basket and tell your child that they slept in it when they were an itty bitty baby (they’ll love that story….).

Onesies, onesies, onesies. Tons of them….cute outfits are find but Onesies are what your child will live in. Cute outfits are really just for going out….which probably won’t happen a whole lot when baby is really small.

Swing…..battery operated. Does not have to be all tricked out…..the simple ones work just as well as the fancy ones. It’s all about the motion. This is a GOD SEND!!

Bouncy Chair….not as essential as swing but still a great thing to put baby in when you need to take a shower or cook dinner. Vibrations are great, too….help lull baby (or most babies, anyway)

Comfortable chair for you to feed baby or breastfeed baby. ONe that is easy to get up from if baby falls asleep. A glider is optimal…..

Soothing heartbeat CD and a CD Player for baby’s room. The soothing heartbeat sound will help calm baby down at bedtime…..and introducint a music regime at this young age is great because baby will learn to associate certain songs and sounds with relaxing and bedtime. Get some great CDs for you to dance with baby, too…..I think dancing is one of the best activities for parents to do with their children. It teaches them an appreciation for music, not to take life too serioulsy and it faciliates a great bond between the parents and the child. Music soothes…..it brightens….it clarifies….it heals.

A Snugli…..one of those front-carrying baby holders. Great for quick trips to the store or walks around the neighborhood. Baby will LOVE being so close to you and you will have your hands free to do what you need to do.

These are MY essentials…..I am sure there are other items you will need. But when I look back on the days when my ladies’ were babies….these are the items that come to my mind first as “essentials”.

Have fun….good luck and Celebrate Baby!!
