Campus OR Off Campus??

Okay, so I’m going to be going to UCLA, and was wondering if it would be chaper to get a dorm or get some sort of apartment? Are UCLA’s dorms nice? DO they have less-nicer and nicer dorms? How much aprox. would it cost to live in a dorm compared to how much it would cost living off campus? Feel free to add ANYTHING you like, ’cause I need help chosing. Oh, and I live on the whole other side on the U.S. in Virginia so living with some family, etc. I can’d do since I don’t kno any family or friends form Califonia.

Thanks!

Oh, and for the ones who live in Cali. do you think I will like it there, I love the sun, beachs and under 21 clubs lol. (I’m 18.) Will it be much different form Virginia life (I live in a smaller town btw.)
Oh, and you can answer this question if you know: I’m hopeing I can make the cheerleading team (since I’ve cheered forever) and was wondering if the cheerleaders go on competions and stuff?

You can always find places that are cheaper than dorms, but the bigger question is – is it worth it? There is a large body of research that links living on-campus to higher GPAs, better learning outcomes and increased graduation rates for students. Living in a dorm will provide you with better integration with the social and academic components of the institution. It will also allow you to make closer friendships to folks who share the same social and academic interests and provide an additional layer of support for you in college. Commuter students have a higher rate of attrition (dropping out) for many reasons, which you can also look into (google scholar “college commuter students” for details), and it is a persistent challenge for colleges to integrate commuter students into the institution and institutional culture. It will be much easier to make friends in the dorms and get accustomed to life in LA. You’ll love California, I’m from the east cost originally and I can say that it is so much better out here in Cali! Good luck with the move and with college and congrats on getting into UCLA as an out-of-state student, that’s hard to do!
