How can I prevent my computer from getting viruses?
Hi, we just got a new computer. Our old one was totally dead from viruses and trojans. Our new one is showing itself to be superior to our expectations. Its fast and reliable. We don’t want to lose this computer, so what can we do to prevent viruses form infecting our computer?
We use Firefox 3 as our browser
We have Windows Live Onecare
We don’t download music or games, only a few programs
All I really need the computer for is making videos and sending them on YouTube. I don’t need much e-mail and I got all the music I need for my iPod on a different computer. Is Windows Live Onecare good or a waste? Will AVG free edition do the trick? Should I run virus scans bi weekly? Should I delete old files that I don’t use? What things can I do as a person to help my computer from getting viruses. Detailed answers would really help!
I’ve been on the internet since before it started (ARPANET) and I’ve never downloaded a virus.
NEVER download “free” copyrighted content. NEVER use a torrent program.
NEVER click on a link in your email unless you can see the actual address the link is going to send you to, and it’s something you asked someone for. And if it sounds too good to be true, it is. You DID NOT win the Irish Sweepstakes without buying a ticket, you WILL NOT get 26 million dollars for helping an ex-treasurer of the Nigerian government, etc.
NEVER go to web sites you don’t know.
NEVER download a program from any site but the author’s site, or a KNOWN-good site, like Sourceforge.
Subscribe to a few technology feeds, so you know whether a formerly safe site has been compromised.
How do you keep your body from being hit by cars? Don’t walk across freeways, don’t play in traffic … common sense.
