You are not Here to Live the Life of Others
Dreams. What are they? Are they just images inside of our minds during sleep? Can we make our dreams come true? Of course we can make our dreams come true, if only we believe enough in our dreams. We are not here to live the dreams of others. That is what makes us unique. Each and every one of us has a dream. Some only speak of their desires and their dreams. Some actually work diligently to make them come true.
Positive thinking will help make your dreams become a reality. Remember the story as a child?
“I think I can, I think I can, I think I can”. Instead of saying “I think I can”, change your words to “I know I can, I know I can, I now I can”. I remember as a child, my father always told me I could do and be whatever I wanted and to never take “no” for an answer. On the other hand, my mother always told me I would never “amount to anything” and she berated me quite a bit. She always focused on the negative aspects of my personality while my father focused on the positive that I had to offer. Had I listened to my mother, I would have had a very poor self image growing up. Instead, I chose to set out to prove her wrong. At the same time, I focused on my positive side and worked very hard at staying positive even in the face of adversity.
The first thing one can do is write down all of your desires and dreams. Make a list of the things you desire to achieve. If money is one of your concerns, write down all of the things you would do if you had enough money to do them. I use to write stories inside of my diary of what I would do if I had a particular type of job or had a particular amount of money. I remember laying in my bed at night as a teenager and writing what I wanted my life to be and what I wanted to do. I would even cut out photos of houses, furniture or a particular lay out of what I wanted, including photos of clothing or shoes and jewelry. Dreams give us the positive energy to kick us into doing.
Next, write down all of things you think it would take to make your dreams come true and make a list. Start making all attempts at making your “list” come true. As a teenager, I remember my friend and I took my fathers’ lawn mower and gas can full of gas and went door to door asking the neighbors if they would like us to cut their lawn for $8! Can you imagine getting your lawn cut for just $8??? In today’s world, that would be a steal of a deal. We would not even be able to fill up the gas can for eight dollars. Back when I was a teenager, eight dollars could buy us alot of things we had dreamt of having. When writing down your dreams, don’t limit yourself due to doubts or fears. Think big and think large!
Once you have written down your dreams and filled up your list with photos of the things you desire, make a plan to get those dreams to come true. Set a goal. I decided that each day I would work on something I had written down. Times may be tough and you may not have a car to get you places, but where there is a will, there is a way! I do admit that I have had times in my life where I let despair consume me. But I realized that despair, doubt, self pity, self loathing as well as thinking negative, got me no where! These negative thoughts and doubts prevented me from growing as a person. Look yourself in the mirror each day and if you have to, practice being positive! Tell yourself what a wonderful person you are! Tell yourself all the great things you have to offer! You will be harnessing the power of your inner resources to bring your dreams into reality, when you tell yourself each and every day what a terrific person you are!
The more you invision your dreams, the more powerful you become at making your dreams a reality. Do not listen to people who doubt your dreams. You are not here to be what someone else wants you to be. Do not listen to people who have negative things to say about you. If someone tells you that you are wasting your time dreaming, it is time to turn a deaf ear to negative people. Many people give up on their dreams because they allow others to place self doubt in their minds. Do not listen to people who don’t believe in you. Surround yourself with positive energy. That means you should hang around people who have positive energy instead of negative. Having positive intention, focusing our thoughts and visions on good things is extremely powerful, especially when it comes from our heart. If you are doing what you have always dreamed of doing, if you are doing something you believe in and you honestly enjoy, do not let others dissuede you from fulfilling your dreams. What is the old saying? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.
Developing a positive mindset is one of the most powerful life strategies there is when it comes to living our dreams. Our behaviour patterns are essential to our survival. Some people may say “well, as a child, I had such a terrible childhood and all this negative baggage”. I believe that people who let their past shackle them, have the inability to grow. Their positive thinking has become stunted. Allowing ourselves to live in the past is a kind of “brainwashing” . When you empower yourself with positive thinking, you get to choose which negative beliefs to wash away. You have the power to wash away all of your past by chosing to live in the present. Everything we say or do is a sort of affirmation of what we are chosing for ourselves as a person. The type of people we associate with also has alot to do with how we see ourselves. By chosing positive thinking people to associate with; by chosing to say and think in a positive manner; by chosing to work hard at making our dreams come true, we chose not to live the dreams of others but live our own dreams. Yes, there will be jealous people along the way who will want to keep you down through negative words. It is up to you to chose NOT to listen to those words. If you continually repeat to yourself each and every day that you are working towards your dream, you will see your dreams come true. Indeed positive inner strength will also spread to others!
I remember one day as I was preparing for my entrance exam for the military, I had ran three miles and was growing weary and tired. I began walking in a quick jog. In the near distance, I saw this group of church goers walking out of their church building and going towards their car. They were all smiling and shaking hands. This young man dressed in a lovely suit was holding his bible and walking towards me on the sidewalk. He was absolutely glowing! He must have had a really nice day or had felt extremely positive from the service he had just left because as he passed me, I was suddenly captured by his aura of positive energy. It was as if I had jogged right into a heavenly light! It completely wrapped around me and I felt so good that all I could do was smile. As I jogged away from him, I turned back to look at this young man and said to myself “WOW!”.
I remember later telling my older son (who is very involved with his church) about what had happened and he told me “now you know what it is like to walk with the spirit”. Indeed! If I could feel that way every day, what a wonderful blessing that would be. It was such an overpowering feeling. From that day on, I have tried to live each day in a positive way. I have tried to be free of the negative energy that seems to truely zap our zest for life. There’s no easy answer as to how to do this and man times, its quite difficult to free yourself from those who are trying to target you and bring negative energy in your direction. If you try to live your life free of negative energy and work each and every day to make your dreams come true, you will start to experience seismic changes for the better in many aspects of your life.
