Could learning a language other than Spanish be better for seeking employment in the USA?

More people living in America speak Spanish than any other language other than English. Obviously then, there is a great demand in the job market for employees who are fluent in Spanish. However, for that very reason, I imagine that there is also a great supply of job applicants who speak Spanish. Furthermore, wouldn’t an employer prefer someone for whom Spanish is his or her native tongue rather than a second language? Therefore, would learning Spanish really make me more competitive?

I am sure that the correct answer varies according to the industry and location in which you are seeking employment. To avoid making my question too narrow, I will not specify an industry. I will state, though, that I live on Long Island, NY.

It depends on where you apply for work. Spanish is the most common language spoken after English, but there are growing populations from other parts of the world. I think Mandarin Chinese is going to become more common, since China is one of our main trading partners. There are also areas of the country with growing muslim populations from several places around the world, with those populations centering around immigrants from the same country (Somalis, Indonesian Islands, etc) If you live near one of these population centers, knowing the language of the majority local immigrant population is needed. The CIA is looking for people who speak any language, giving higher priority to people who speak the languages of the Middle East, North Africa, and China.
