Living Will Michigan
In society today there is much concern about helping those who are “underprivileged”. The concept is that there are certain people who have not had the same privileges as others in life, and that we need to help them out so that they have an equal chance for success. In theory this sounds like a good idea, but practically it suffers many problems due to the fact that privilege is often defined according to values which do not actually translate to success. Usually, after you pull down all the facades, privilege is defined as access to wealth. Unfortunately, it is not that simple. Giving a person wealth, instead of investing in them the character and skills which produce true success, will ultimately fail. We constantly hear of people who win the lottery, and not too soon afterward are completely broke again. They didn’t have the character and skills necessary to achieve true success.
There are certain values which naturally lead to success and, as a byproduct, will naturally lead to wealth. The values which naturally lead to success are biblical values. When people are taught not to steal, not to bear false witness, to be just, to be respectful of others, to be industrious, creative and all of the other values which are taught in Scriptures, they will naturally develop successful lives.
A good friend of mine is the property manager of a church in downtown Ypsilanti, Michigan. He is a local man who seems to know just about everybody in the community. As we were talking outside of the church one day, we could see many people walking about who have drug addictions, are alcoholics, and have even been approached on those same streets by prostitutes. I asked him what he thought was the problem that was plaguing that community. He told me that it was a result of people forsaking biblical values. I agree with his assessment.
There are many ways in which biblical values lead to success, here are a few of them:
1. Naturally
2. Psychologically
3. Spiritually
Biblical values naturally lead to success. When I worked in Belfast, Northern Ireland, they often referred to people who became Christians as “having become good living”. What they were referring to is that when a person became a Christian they would forsake behaviors which are self-destructive and adopt values that are successful. They witnessed so many people leave behind a life of poverty and crime to become successful, wealthy and productive members of society through Christian faith that they summed up the influence of biblical faith as “good living”. While biblical faith will by nature adopt biblical values, biblical values will also naturally lead to success regardless of whether a person has biblical faith. When such values are instilled in people, they will be a source of great blessing and privilege.
Not only are biblical values a natural source of blessing and privilege, but the truths of Scripture exert a good influence upon people psychologically. The biblical worldview portrays humanity as created in the image of God, and invested with such a value that Jesus personally paid for us what we are worth in God’s sight. That value was the very life of Jesus which paid for us at the cross. The fact that God loves us so much that Jesus died for us establishes forever the fact that we are loved. The knowledge that a person is loved and appreciated unconditionally gives them the courage and the passion to take risks, overcome challenges and move forward in life. Again, such values such as being valuable and loved, will exert a positive influence on society when taught to people, even apart from biblical faith.
There are many ways that biblical values positively affect people, but one way is that the Bible depicts humanity as having significance, and the ability to affect change. One of the greatest joys in life is being able to have a positive impact on the world. Biblical values empower people to make such an impact. It creates in people the character and values necessary to effect positive change, and imparts the wisdom and knowledge necessary to do so.
Finally, biblical values lead to success spiritually, when they result in biblical faith. True biblical faith is not simply philosophical, moral or psychological but it is a restored relationship with the living God. That relationship is transformational, empowering and revolutionary. God’s grace and His presence become a reality in the believer’s life. It is God’s grace and presence which empowers people to live out biblical values. Biblical religion does not just tell us to be loving, industrious, grateful, good tempered, gracious, compassionate, truthful or just; it gives us the power to develop these characteristics.
The influence of biblical values on a person’s life is the greatest privilege they can never know. To be disconnected from such values leaves a person truly underprivileged. The best way that we can help people become successful, the way that leads people out of bondage to poverty, and the way which leads to true equality is the way of biblical values. This is not only true for individuals, but for society as well. The restoration of biblical values in society will naturally lead to success, to a healthy economy, to a decrease in crime, to healthy families, will reduce domestic violence and in every way leads to the type of society that many people long for. The greatest privilege a society can know is to be built upon biblical values.
