New Mexico Drivers License Requirements
It is required that each person have a driver’s license to drive on the roads of the state of New Mexico. If you live in New Mexico, it is a requirement that you have a New Mexico driver’s license.
There are 4 types of driver’s license in New Mexico: Instructional Permit (or learner’s permit), Provisional License and Unrestricted Driver’s License.
Instructional Permit
One may drive with an instructional permit as long as there is a licensed driver over the age of twenty-one in the passenger seat. If you have a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the passenger seat, one can drive with an instructional permit. In order to get an instructional permit, you must be at least fifteen and pass a written test as well as a vision screening. For people under the age of eighteen, a signed consent form from your parents is also required.
There are a number of requirements and restrictions for an Instructional Permit: Minimum 15 years of age
Driver must currently be attending a Traffic Safety Bureau approved driver eduction class which has practice driving and DWI education
Driver must have a qualified instructor in the passenger seat or
Driver must have a licensed driver twenty-one years of age or older who has been licensed for a minimum of 3 years in the passenger seat
Instructional permit must be retained for at least six months
Provisional License
A provisional license will allow you to drive without having a supervisor in the passenger seat. A provisional license will allow you to drive without the requirement of having a supervisor in the passenger seat. Here are the restrictions and requirements.
· Practice driving must be completed – at least fifty total hours with at least 10 hours of night driving
· Passing a written and driving test is required as well as passing a vision test
· Driver must be at least 15 years 6 months and have held an instructional permit for 6 months
· Driver must not have been convicted of a traffic violation for at least 90 days prior to applying
· Between midnight and 5 AM, driver must not drive on public highways unless a driver 21 or older is present, required by family or a medical emergency or driving to or from work
Unrestricted License
The requirements for an unrestricted license are:
· Have a provisional license for 12 months
· Driver must not have had a traffic violation for 90 days
· Driver must not have any traffic violations pending
· While holding a provisional license, must not have been found guilty or have an offense pending involving the use of alcohol or drugs
The average person will typically get an instructional permit while age 15 and attend classes at an approved driving school. A provisional license will be obtained after 6 months. Driving without an instructor or supervisor is then allowed. After 12 months of holding a provisional license, an unrestricted license can be obtained.
