Changing a junk title to a clear or other title in another state?
I bought a 2008 HD motorcycle from Iowa. It was in a fire and issued a junk certificate. It runs, drives and is mostly cosmetic damaged, all else is fine with some hard cleaning. Someone missed the boat on this bike to junk it but then Iowa says if the cost is more than 50% of the value to repair the vehicle they junk it. I live in Ohio and the bike will be ready soon and I would like to get a title or a builder’s title if this is possible. Anybody know how to do this or if there is a way to get some form of title for this bike? I checked Ohio BMV and it does not give any thing on builder’s title except for salvaged.
It is not too difficult. In Ohio the first thing you will have to get is an “out of state inspection”. This can be gotten at any license plate outlet for about $5.00 and some car dealerships.. All it does is verifty that your Vin nmbers match. In other words, the Vin on the bike matches the tiltle. Then you take both documents to the DMV and they will issue you a “salvage” Ohio title. They can also provide you with instructions on the next step. Once you have the “salvage” title, you complete the work on the machine within the guidelines of their instructions (basically keeping receipts on parts purchesed and installed). Then you schedule an appointment with the State Highway Patrol lnspection station. They will basically verify that the bike is not stolen and neither are the parts. They will issue you a completed and approved form. Once you have this you take all of your forms with title back to the DMV and they will issue you a “Rebuilt Salvage”. This one is the final document needed in order to obtain plates, registration, etc. It sounds like a lot of steps but once you have done it a few times you get used to it. Ohio title laws pretty much suck if you ask me and are too restrictive on the good guys but …. that’s Ohio.
