Unempoyment Benefit – Worked in MA but will live in PA?
I worked in Boston Massachusetts last 2 years for a salary of 90K. Today will be my last day (lay off). I have a house in Pennsylvania and an apartment in Boston, MA. Last year, 2008 I claimed myself as a Pennsylvania resident because of mortgage Tax credit.
Now Pennsylvania pays around 450 per week for unemployment benefit and Massachusetts gives 627 per week. I am leaving MA end of this month and moving to my house in Pennsylvania though the lease of the rented apartment will end July 31, 2009.
My question is, “Can I apply for unemployment in Massachusetts and continue it since I worked there and my employer paid the insurance there?” Also Unemployment benefit is substantially more in Massachusetts than in Pennsylvania.
Please help me out.
You can apply in MA but when you move your case will move with you. You must reapply when you move to PA. The states will coordinate on your benefits but you’ll be subject to the PA maximum benefits. Expect a delay of a couple of months once you move for the states to coordinate and PA to verify your MA income. Any arrears will be paid once PA approves your application for benefits.
