Living Will Sample
What easily accessible biological material will live the longest?
I’m an artist and have no scientific knowledge whatsoever (please excuse my basic language here). I require a simple biological sample e.g. like blood, saliva etc, that when placed under a microscope, it will stay ‘alive’ for at least 24 hours (longer the better). I tried using my blood and unfortunately it dried within a few minutes. The aim of my project is to have live organisms moving around when viewed under the microscope. Also, are there any particular liquids or techniques I could use to preserve the sample longer? I’m limited to only glass slides and slip covers. Also, please don’t say sperm because its not an option. Many thanks for helping.
Very little will live under a coverslip for 24 hours. In fact, anything under a coverslip will become totally desiccated in that length of time, unless the edges of the coverslip are sealed with a waterproof sealant. But even then, nothing will remain alive for 24 hours except possibly some bacteria. but those will not meet your requirement of “organisms moving around”. There are many common protozoans that give a very impressive demonstration. But typically they start slowing down within 15 minutes and are dead within an hour. There are a number of reasons for this including oxygen depletion, waste accumulation, but especially the warming effect of the microscope illuminator.
