When you are playing Texas Hold-em, there are various ways to play the flop to maximize your winnings. Many times, the decision that you are going to make is going to be based not only by what is on the board, but by how the opponent or opponents have been playing that are left remaining in the hand.
If you are sitting there heads-up against a very aggressive player that has been throwing chips around left and right trying to take down pots, you have a few options. If you happen to hit your cards on the flop, your best bet would be to check, allowing your reckless opponent to fire out a bet. In this situation, you then have the option of either raising him, or just smooth calling, waiting to milk him more on the turn, but you do play this risk of letting him catch something to beat your hand so it is important to not slow play for too long.
Now if you don’t hit on the flop, you of course have the option of checking or making a bet. If you just limped in pre-flop, and blank the board, it is best to check and hope to see a free card or two to possibly make something out of your hand. If you can tell your opponent has nothing either, toss out a 2 or 3x raise just to take down the pot.
If you had raised the pot pre-flop, it is best to fire out a bet to test the waters, many times if your opponent doesn’t have much to work with; he is going to toss his cards away knowing that you were already confident before the flop even came. If he raises you, you will most likely need to fold unless you have a solid read on the player and feel that an ALL-IN can get him out. This of course is not the best move for tournament play since if you make a bad read, you cost your self your tournament life.
