So you have decided you want to go out and buy Piranha’s but don’t know where to begin? You picked the right place to start!! Piranha-cove is filled with enthusiasts that will go out of their way to help you get started and offer you all the advice that you will need to successfully keep one of natures most exciting predators in your own home. There are a huge multitude of questions most people ask when they are getting started.
First is which piranha should I purchase?
This question can be complicated because people have their opinions on which piranha’s make the best pets. Having a solitary Piranha will not have as much activity as a Shoal typically and the feedings are usually less out of control. The downside of a Shoal is that there will be more maintenance to care for them.
Does it matter if I go with Serrasalmus or Pygocentrus?
It’s really a matter of personal preference. There are opinions on both sides of the fence as whether or not Serras can coexist in a tank successfully. Serras tend to do well as a solitary fish and are highly aggressive. I personally like the appearance of the various Serra’s more than pygo’s but that’s just personal opinion. Hobbyists tend to have good luck shoaling Pygocentrus Piranha’s together for long periods of time with minimal cannibalism. If you want to have more than one Serra in your tank I suggest you become very active in the Cohabitation section on this site and do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before you make the investment in a risky endeavor.
Where should I purchase my Piranhas?
There are quite a few different places you can acquire piranhas. You can visit your local Fish store “LFS” It will be unlikely that they will carry much more than small Red Bellied Piranha’s. “Pygocentrus Nattereri” If you are looking for a rare Piranha I would look to some of the well known online vendors,
George at Shark Aquarium ,
Pedro at AquaScape,
Nick at Don’t Go in the Water
They will typically offer specials on various piranhas if you are having the piranha shipped too you.
What equipment will I need to keep my new Piranhas?
WOW that’s a really big question to ask. There are many ways to answer that. First off you need to ask yourself how much money you want to spend. The Primary things you will need for your new hobby are
Aquarium
If you go with a solitary Piranha the minimum size you should keep the Piranha in is a 55 Gallon. The Piranha needs to have a decent amount of space to swim around, find places to hide, have room to explore and turn himself around. It’s feasible to put the Piranha in a temporary 20-29 Gallon setup but it’s not practical to keep them in their for life. With that in mind you can move up to 3 Piranha’s to live in the 55 Gallon tank for life however it would be far more practical to go to a 75 Gallon Tank. 75 Gallon tanks are the best place to start if you are just getting into the hobby. You can usually figure that between 15-45 Gallons per Piranha is adequate. If you put the Piranha’s at the rate of 15 gallons per Piranha you are doing what is called overstocking. Overstocking your tank will require more frequent water changes, a watchful eye on aggression, high need for a highly efficient filtration system. I recommend that you stick with 25 Gallons+ Per Piranha. Even though you can stuff a lot more Piranhas inside the tank it will become challenging to keep up with the fish. If you have a large amount of time to invest with the fish then you can be the judge.
Stand
There are a bunch of different options here. Some people go out and buy a stand wood or metal and some people build their own. If you want to build your own 2 common methods are to stack up the high quality concrete blocks and then paint them. Over the top put 2×10s then a final layer of foam. The other common option is to create a wood frame with supports and wrap it with pine. Paint or treat the wood and you can even add hinged doors. It’s fairly easy to make your own stand just make sure you make a sturdy one.
Filtration
This is very important. I would recommend that you don’t skimp on this step. There are 3 different types of filtering that take place in an aquarium.
Mechanical filtration is perhaps the easiest to understand. This is the process of physically removing larger waste particles from the water by trapping them is some type of mechanical device. These devices make use of a filter pad made of floss material or maybe sponge material. While the water flows through these materials, particles are trapped in the matrix of the mechanical media. This will usually result in crystal clear aquarium water with no floating particles. The mechanical filter media will require cleaning or replacement as it becomes clogged with waste particles. This clogging can substantially slow down the flow rate of certain types of filters, so you will need to daily observe the flow rate as a good indicator of when the mechanical media will need to be replaced. You should be aware that the waste material trapped in the mechanical media is not really removed from the aquarium environment, it is just all trapped in a convenient place for you to remove it. For this reason, the more frequently you clean the mechanical media, the better the water quality should be in your aquarium.
Chemical filter materials do not actually filter the aquarium water. They control or convert its chemical makeup or characteristics.
Biological Filtration
A build-up of toxic nitrogenous wastes is a natural result of all aquarium inhabitants’ life processes. In nature, the body of water is large enough to dissipate or dilute these wastes. Some will even be converted into usable energy by living organisms. Within an aquarium however, without powerful biological breakdown of these toxins, the fish literally poison themselves. This is the reason why biological filtration is the most desirable of all aquarium filtration.
This type of filtration is the purification of the aquarium water by using living organisms, such as nitrifying bacteria. These desirable bacteria will attach themselves to all hard surfaces within the aquarium system. They use the toxins as a food, converting harmful toxins such as ammonia and nitrite into less harmful nitrate. Nitrate can then be removed by performing regular water changes.
What do I buy?
The best place to start is to look at the size of aquarium that you currently own. There are rumors that it’s critical to have 8-10 times of turnover in a tank per hour to ensure that there is enough mechanical filtration. It’s actually far more important that you have adequate media space in your filter so that you can get the most biological filtration. In my personal opinion a Canister is the best place to start for filtration. If you can afford to go with a canister then you should go with a canister. I will be adding another article soon where I will share with you all the various filter types and their advantages. Again I highly recommend that you drop the $100 or so and pick up a high quality Canister as opposed to the $35 you would pay on a Power Filter. Don’t skimp on adding the biological media. The Bio Rings work really well.
Heater
2.5-5.0 Watts Per gallon. Ebo Jagers and Visi-Therms seem to be really decent heaters but you can buy whatever you feel comfortable with. Buy a completely submersible.
Power head
In a 75 Gallon tank or larger a Power Head is useful to circulate the oxygen rich water throughout the tank and too provide current into your tank.
Top
This will keep the water from evaporating out into the room; it will also keep the fish from jumping out of the tank and keep the water from building up on the lights. Many tanks will come with a top otherwise a top can be made from the guard material they use on Florescent light fixtures.
Lighting
If you are going to be going with plants I would suggest just buying a Power Compact light right away. The output they offer is far more adequate for plants. If you only want a couple of really hardy plants you can get buy with an in-expensive T-12 or T-8 fixture.
Substrate
If you are going to be going with Plants I would suggest going with Fluorite as your substrate. It will cost you a bit of money but it will save you headaches later on from dieing plants. If you are going to only keep a couple hardy plants or no plants then I would suggest very fine gravel or possibly Silica Sand. Make sure with any substrate that you wash it well before using.
Plants
Buy plants according to your substrate and lighting abilities. I really like Java Ferns.
Décor
I recommend adding what you need to make the tank look cool “to you”. I like pieces of natural looking driftwood. Small ph neutral rocks also look nice.
