Can I put a different address for my income and federal tax forms?
I’m listed as living somewhere else, but will they check that? Can I put a different address (I’m not listed though) on my tax forms?
Actually, it’s more common than you realize. Many people use the address of their accountants, lawyers, or business managers on their tax returns. I used to work at a private bank/money management firm. We used the company’s address for nearly all of the clients. That way any notices would come to us so that we could take care of things more quickly. Former president George W. Bush’s tax return lists the firm that managed the blind trust that he had to establish to handle his investments.
There is a chance that using an address in a different state will generate a notice. For example, my former employer is in New York City so occasionally, clients would receive a notice from NYC regarding that city’s Unincorporated Business Tax. We would simply send a letter stating that the client lived elsewhere and we used our office address for convenience. We would deposit the refund checks into the clients’ accounts and if money was owed, we would draft their accounts to have a bank check issued.
