Will using medicaid for myself (a US citizen) effect my wife’s chances of becoming a citizen (perm. resident)?

I have heard that using government aid, such as food stamps, will not be looked on kindly by those who decide whether or not to give citizenship. I’m in a bit of a pickle and could certainly benefit drastically from medicaid. But, will it hurt my wife’s citizenship process? She is currently a permanent resident and we live in the state of Michigan.

No, it will not effect her eligibility for citizenship. You had to prove sufficient funds to sponsor her at the time you applied for her residency status. It sounds like your financial situation changed since. If you need more information regarding eligibility requirements for citizenship you can find them on USCIS website.

In addition, there are lot of couples throughout US that are in a similar situation.
