What is the best internet service to get?
I live in an apartment complex in Columbia, SC, and I’ve read too many bad comments about NetZero to even consider that one anymore. Also, I’m not sure what kmb or whatever other computer speed terms mean, and I just want something that will work at a reasonable to high speed without kicking me off the internet, screwing up all the time, giving me weird extra fees that I don’t want/need, or downloading painfully slow if I decide I want to watch something on youtube one day. Any ideas on what to do and what to look 4? What ?s to ask these internet providers before I sign on with them? Anything would be appreciated it. Thank you so much to anyone who helps me out.
Short answer:
1) Don’t get Dail-up
2) Basic DSL service will probably be just fine for you
3) Cable Internet is faster than DSL, but costs more
4) Verizon FiOS is the fastest and is the same or less than cable in most places.
Based on your post, then Basic DSL should be right for you. Unless you plan on donwloading Gigabytes worth of information a day that is all most people need.
Internet, email, even sending photos is perfectly acceptable at basic DSL speeds. And yes – YouTube too.
Now if you plan on wacthing a LOT of online video (like Netflix online) then you should consider Cable or FiOS. FiOS is Verizon’s brand name for fiber optic technology and is superior in every way to cable. But it is not available in all areas.
You also want to check out the “bundles” that some providers offer. I know that the cable companies usually have packages where you get your phone, Internet, and TV all on one bill for about $100/month for the frist 12 months.
Verizon packages are similar, but in some cases you get satellite TV, not FiOS tv – check with them. Personally, I would prefer FiOS tv or cable over satellite – but that is only because we have our cable split 12 times in our house (legally).
BTW – basic DSL packages are normally about $15-$20/month. You do however need a regular phone line in the house to get DSL. They use the same line, but unlike the old dail-up services, you can use the phone and internet at the same time.
