In Chinese, ‘Sat’ means to kill. Some call it ’shar chi.’ Some call it ’sat hei.’ Whatever term is used, it definitely has negative connotations, which essentially mean ‘killing energy.’ So how do we define this so-called ‘killing energy’ in a Feng Shui perspective? For this, we turn to Richmond’s Canada line. Richmond’s Canada Line commenced operations on August 17, 2009, a transit system connecting both Richmond Centre and the airport (YVR) to Downtown Vancouver. Ever since its construction and completion, many businesses have been affected. From a Feng Shui point of view, the Canada Line going through No.3 Road is like a knife cutting right through the heart of Richmond, hence the term ‘killing energy’. Many businesses along No. 3 road are destined for a relocation or loss of customers. Some of the reasons behind the ‘killing energy’ is because it is hard to have energy settled when the Skytrain knifes right through businesses and of course their finances as well.
The effects of this ‘killing energy’ has just begun and will continue to hurt businesses along No. 3 road. The most recent casualty was Milestones, a restaurant chain that has been located on No. 3 and Westminster for many years recently closed its operations on October 31, 2009. The restaurant has been there for 15 years but has found it difficult to maintain the restaurant due to a reduction in customers ever since the construction of the Canada Line. If you have ever been inside of Milestones prior to its closure, you will be able to notice the Skytrain passing through the restaurant’s windows right at eye level. The feeling is uncomfortable and a little bit unsettling. For those who don’t believe in Feng Shui, you can also base this upon feeling. Whatever does not feel right can also be considered as Feng Shui.
As one drives through the main road of Richmond today, more business failures and closures are witnessed on both sides of the road. Another recent casualty is Petcetera. Unfortunately, the list goes on and on and this will continue to be the trend. From a remedy standpoint there is not much you can do about it aside from putting up plants in front of the offices to cover up the ‘killing energy’. Businesses located underneath the skytrain will feel external pressures from the rail line up above while businesses at the same level as the skytrain will feel energy whisk away. Businesses or residents who are located a few floors above the rail line would not only feel their legs taken out which is called ‘cutting leg’ energy, but also, energy is being ‘dragged’ away, a typical situation of pulling qi.
If one decides to open up a business, consider something that is special where people must require the services, for example, Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Physicians, Pharmacies, Dentists, and so forth. Another option is that it has to be an idea or business that differentiates itself from the rest of the pack. In Chinese, we call these businesses ‘Underdog businesses’.
It will be interesting to see what will happen to businesses and how companies will transform themselves in order to survive this ‘killing energy’ in the next few years. The best option for the businesses located along No.3 road is to relocate to a different part of Richmond. Relocating two blocks away from the Canada Line would be the best solution as their regular customers can continue their activities with the same companies without any inconveniences.
